Mizzentop Students Participate in Simulated Stock Market Game
In our efforts to bring real-life applications to math, students in Eighth Grade are participating in the Connecticut Simulated Stock Market Game (SMS), sponsored by the Danbury News Times. Students compete at the national and state levels. The SMS was designed by Stock-Trak, Inc., a company that produces college level simulation programs used by over 800 professors and approximately 40,000 students worldwide for over 12 years.
Working in teams, students start with $100,000 to invest, and may borrow another $100,000, making a total buying power $200,000, minus commissions. The SMS encourages students to understand the stock market and research companies by using the main financial web sites. “The SMS is a wonderful tool for teaching math, technology, economics, finance, and current events,” commented Karin Shultz, Upper School Math Teacher. Teams are encouraged to think about what goods or services they see everyone using and enjoying. The SMS web site offers a research page with links that help in the research of any company, so that teams choose stocks they really want to trade. “Our students at MDS are really having a great time. We have one team that has been ranked second regionally for a few weeks. Students are beginning to sell many stocks and are really aware of the current market.”

Mizzentop Receives NYSAIS Accreditation
On June 18, 2007, Mizzentop Day School was granted accreditation by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). Mizzentop's NYSAIS accreditation is the result of two years of self-evaluation, culminating in a comprehensive report submitted to and evaluated by a visiting team of NYSAIS member educators and administrators who then made the recommendation regarding the school's accreditation to the NYSAIS Board of Trustees.
"Throughout the country, independent school accrediting agencies hold independent schools to a higher set of standards with a greater degree of accountability. It took a tremendous amount of work on the part of the staff and many parents to gain this prestigious status," Steven Cash, Head of School at Mizzentop, said.
"We celebrate the tremendous insight and initiative of Lisa Daniels, the founding Head of School, as she laid the foundation upon which to build this outstanding school. It is now our responsibility to continue to forge forward, always keeping the school's mission statement in the forefront as our guiding light," Mr. Cash added.
Mizzentop Day School was founded in 1998, and celebrates its 10th anniversary this school year. Mizzentop is an independent, co-educational day school for students in Pre-K through Grade Eight, dedicated to instilling values and a love for learning in children that will last a lifetime. The school is committed to providing a rigorous and innovative eduational program designed to inspire every child. Mizzentop welcomes students and families of diverse backgrounds and encourages the participation of parents as partners in the educational process.
